Through the notebooks of Ōba Yōzō, a young man who has hidden behind clowning since childhood because he cannot understand other people, Dazai traces a slide into drink, debt and despair in pre-war Tokyo. Painfully honest and strangely tender, one of Japan's best-selling novels.
